Due to climate change, the air conditioning of buildings has become the largest source of energy demand. Most energy production still relies on on fossil fuels, therefore manmade global warming is creating a vicious circle where we demand more energy to cool our homes and offices, and thus contribute to climate change with increased greenhouse emissions. According to the International Energy Agency's report The Future of Cooling, the majority of energy demand for air conditioning is coming from countries in the tropical regions, or with energy production still reliant on coal, oil or natural gas, all producing greenhouse gas emissions which worsen global warming. By 2040, a 197% increase in the number of AC units worldwide is expected, increasing energy demand exponentially and making it very difficult for countries to meet the greenhouse-gas reduction targets of the Paris Agreement. HAT will provide a much-needed solution to this problem.
